Our broad collection of horse sculpture and statues represent the majesty of these noble animals. Generally speaking art depicting horses use them as a symbol to represent power, freedom, independence, nobleness, heroism, competition and triumph.
We represent several artists who have used horses as a muse for their sculptural pieces.
Famed French artist Christian Maas has won several awards with his creations of animals in bronze and aluminium. Arguably his best horse sculpture is Stallion, this large bronze sculpture depicts a large stallion rearing on its hind legs. A classic portrayal of which can mean power, excitement, aggression, and disobedience. Used famously by luxury car brand Ferrari as its emblem of power. As an ohmage to this iconic brand we have the wall sculpture Ferrari Cavallino with both the bronze and aluminium pieces in our collection.
We also represent several Australian artists who have created bronze horse sculpture masterpieces that can be seen all across Australia.
The horse is an essential part of history, mythology, and folklore. The horse was the one of the main driving factors in the progression of human society across centuries. Their loyalty, obedience, power, and spirituality keep them as a revered companion to us that will never be forgotten.
For more information on the horse sculptures, or other sculptures that we have in our collection, or if you’re looking to have a piece commissioned please contact us here.
Announcing new 2021 sponsorship of Craig Lowndes and David Wall in the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup
In the upcoming 2021 Porsche 911 GT3 Cup series in Australia Sculptura are proud to be sponsoring the #38 and #338 Wall Racing entries of David Wall and former V8 Supercar legend Craig Lowndes. The cars will be adorned with the team’s long-time partners Paynter Dixon for the opening rounds. The striking red, black and white colour scheme is inspired by the corporate colours of the main sponsor. Both Wall Racing entries will also feature the Sculptura and Shannons Insurance brands on its front and rear flanks, while Local Pools and Spas will feature on the #38’s rear wing.
Hear from the drivers:
David Wall #38: “We are very pleased with result and worked through a few concepts, before we were happy with the design. This year we have opted for a matte red over the gloss red of previous years. This should look awesome under lights when we head to Sydney and Perth for the two night races this season.”
Craig Lowndes #338: “It’s great for me to have Shannons, Sculptura and Paynter Dixon come onboard. The expectation is to be up the front, but I obviously would have liked more experience driving the category. That’s where I’ll be leaning on Dave, as he has driven and campaigned the cars for several years in the category and knows how to set them up.”
Sculpture chosen for Ladbrokes TV commercial starring Mark Wahlberg
The contemporary stainless steel sculpture Epic by Australian sculptor Lachlan Ross has been chosen for the Ladbrokes TV commercial starring Mark Wahlberg. The Australian born artist who resides mainly in the Byron Bay area was delighted to hear the news that one of his most recent sculptures was picked for the shoot. He had stated that whilst he “doesn’t care for the gambling industry”, the use of his sculpture for artistic purposes is “always welcome”. The news of the A-lister being in Australia during a national and global pandemic was posted by bandt, who learned that he was flown in on private charter specifically to film for the global campaign. Reportedly he was paid very handsomely to fly over 13 hours from the US where he also had to quarantine (privately) for 14 days.
For over 15 years Sculptura has offered art and sculpture rental for various events around Australia. Most notably the Australian Formula 1 Grand Prix, where a new sculpture has been the centrepiece of the gated areas and paddocks for several years. They have also been used for other events such as the Australian Open tennis tournament, Flower and Garden shows, and other TV including the long running Australian soap Neighbours.
Sculptura offer short term sculpture and art rental for events anywhere in Australia and in other specific countries around the world. Often for high profile international events and private events such as birthdays of high profile business men and women, entertainers, and cultural galas.
Long term rental and leases are also available for businesses who like to offset their expenses without the burden of holding and offloading assets. Renting or leasing sculpture comes with great benefits and can be considered for not just corporates and events, but for real estate agents who require property styling during the sales process.

Subjects: Art history ; Sculpture history ; Top 100 sculpture ; Greatest sculptors Author: Dylan B
There are so many magnificent sculptures through out time, to make a list of the top 100 sculptures in history is a difficult task.
There are three main concepts that are considered by many art academics that make a piece of art a “masterpiece”, whether it is a sculpture, a painting, or any other form of art;
– The first is that the work is so original that it overwhelms us with its power.
– The second is that it continues to be seen as a masterpiece throughout time.
– And the third, is that is changes the way generations of artist think about their own style.
Contrary to this, popularity in the 21st century can play a factor in the assessment of a masterpiece of art. Social platforms can easily create popularity through a high volume of impressions. This creates a disproportionate view of what is considered “high-value art”.
We have put together a list of the Top 100 Sculptures ever made. The list is obviously based on subjective views of individuals, as with all art. However, we have cross-referenced our list with other considerations in the art community. We have not listed them from one to one hundred. Every sculpture in the top one hundred sculptures list could be in contention as the greatest sculpture of all time. They are all masterpieces, all are from different periods, with artists from different countries, and with different styles.
The list includes bronze sculpture, marble sculpture and speciality sculpture that are made with all different materials. We have segmented what we have discussed as the top 10 sculptures of all time. Many are from some of the greatest sculptors of all time, such as Auguste Rodin, and Michelangelo where their mastery across time is uncontested. We will be doing a separate article on the greatest sculptors, for now, we are focusing on individual pieces.

Choosing the right garden sculpture
(Part 2 “Placing your garden sculpture” coming soon)
These days gardens are an expansion of your home. Choosing the right piece of art for your garden or courtyard can make or ruin a space.
You must consider four main things when choosing the right garden sculpture:
Style
Size and shape
Material
Feeling
The type or style of artwork will need to be a good match for your garden. Fountains have a propensity to blend in more naturally on a somewhat formal garden, whereas sculptures, benches, and comparable items will fit in virtually everywhere. Modern art can still work in a heritage home, but be very careful not to mix it too much, if your furniture is modern and contemporary then a modern sculpture will match well. If you have antique furniture in a colonial home it may not match quite as well.
You must also work out what scale that fits best in your garden. Though a large part of art in a little garden may create a focus, generally, you’ll need the scale of your artwork to match the scale and design of your backyard. Then again, if you want your yard to be invigorating and pleasant, use lots of vertical components if you use a large-scale art piece. A small intricately detailed statue can work just as well as a larger less detailed piece. For tall vertical trees or plants with narrow branches, choose an equally vertical sculpture such as a figurative marble or bronze standing statue. Alternatively, you may want the piece to stand out by placing a wider piece in the foreground or centre of your garden.
What separates the outdoor space from the rest of your home design is the height and openness of the ceiling or lack thereof. This allows you to fill more of the horizontal space without creating any claustrophobic feelings, so don’t be as concerned if you are looking at larger pieces that appear big in an image or gallery.
Colour may also play a vital part in creating a mood in your backyard. Selecting a piece with more natural colours and materials such as a bronze sculpture will act like your plants and create a more restful sense while contrasting tones like a stainless steel sculpture will create more excitement. The type of garden art which you choose really can help tie together the components of your garden and make the feeling that you want.
What’s your budget? Sculptures and fountains can be an expensive sort of garden art. But the right piece is timeless and will never lose value.
If you choose the right piece it appears virtually inseparable from its environment. It is the overall feeling that is given when you walk into or sit in the outdoor space that you are trying to satisfy.
A statement can be made in many ways with your garden, we cannot all have something as grand as the local botanical gardens, but every part of art added to a backyard, or front yard for that matter, speaks of the owner’s personality, so always decide with your feelings.
Sculpture can bring a missing element to the interior or exterior of your home or business. Sometimes this missing element is physical: like a central point of interest to a room or garden, or perhaps on a more personal level. Maybe it represents your core values or interest at heart. Sculpture can also bring a room into a sharper focus by introducing tranquility or admiration. A lot of the time both a physical element and a sharper focus or feeling can both be accommodated by a sculpture. (more…)

Why High End Retailers Rely on Interior Design
Have you ever wondered what sets high-end retailers apart from middle-range retailers? That’s a question that many middle-range retailers have been asking themselves for years, in an effort to break into the high-end market. Some do it successfully, and many others don’t. We have a secret to tell you – often, it has nothing to do with the product. The clothing or products or whatever they are selling are often made by the same people on the ground floor. A Bronze sculpture is often referred to as simply “Bronze”. Bronze is still one of the most popular metals in which sculptures and other figures are made from. To date, there are still some famous bronze sculptures that still exist today.
John Waddell was famous for bronze sculptures as well as many sculptures and figures made from bronze. In 2007 some of Waddell’s famous works of art were stolen. To date the bronze sculptures have never been found nor does any concrete information exist on their whereabouts.
Famous Bronze Sculpture Artists
Famous artists include Woody Van Amen, Karel Appel, Abed Abei and many more. These men were well known for creating a sculpture that eventually gained considerable recognition and still stands today.
Sculptures made from alpha-bronze consists of an alpha/ bronze solution. Alpha/bronze solutions are commonly used to produce coins. At a time when bronze reached its peak of popularity, bronze was classified as “classic bronze” and “mild bronze”. During wartime “classic bronze” was used to make weapons. Items such as helmets were made from “mild bronze”. Therefore, bronze had a number of useful applications and it served the purpose quite well.
Bronze Sculpture Sculpting Process:
Making bronze figurines and sculptures is quite difficult. The bronze casting process may involve lost-wax casting. Tiny wax bronzed figures were created centuries ago and some still exist today. Those working with bronze casting will work in direct wax. After the metal has cooled down the leftover ceramic part of the figure is removed or chipped away then you are left with an image of some kind. The image can be almost anything, creativity plays a critical role when moulding and sculpting ideas from wax and bronze.
For larger more complex sculptures the sculptor will use study models in order to get a more accurate depiction of what they are attempting to create or re-create. Sometimes a welding process is used when sculpting. The welding process permits large images to be sculpted in smaller portions then joined together. A bronze sculpture can be created in bits and moulded together at a later time.
Royal Bronze Sculptures:
The Great Exhibition of 1851 depicts Prince Albert and other smaller figures which still proudly stands behind the Albert Hall in London. Tourists still seem fascinated with this bronze sculpture and will come from all parts of the world to view this recreation of Prince Albert.
What ever work involved in producing a bronze sculpture is well worth the time and effort for the artist. A bronze sculpture can last centuries and can always be given careful attention if any cracks or damage occurs.

As art historian Jonathan Fineberg said “Art, like falling in love, simultaneously disorganises and natures the self towards a creative reordering.” Beautiful sculptures in your garden will always give an everlasting first impression. A metal garden sculpture is uniquely placed to stimulate emotions at a personal level since it exists in the same space as the observer. The power of art is its ability to manifest an idea, concept and most importantly an emotion. A metal garden sculpture can be disturbing or comforting, transformative or revelatory, either way, it is undeniably impactful.
At Sculptura, we provide an array of exclusive contemporary Metal Garden Sculpture from some of the world’s most renowned artists including; Christian Maas, Lachlan Ross, and David Polasek. It is a forge of a modern past. The flawless lines of this Metal Garden sculpture portray, a scared and starved woman, one whose life depends on the next move. Placing the sculpture in your landscape projects the emotions to the environment in an elegant style only it can do. Placing of an art is solely dependent on your intention, meaning moving your art around can create different impacts to the observer interacting with your landscape. The stainless steel sculpture by Lanchlan Ross “Sunset” is a striking interwoven construction of marine glades that stands as a perfect water feature for your landscape. When well placed, it gives an illusion of the sunset and most importantly the relaxing feel that comes with it. Lanchlan Ross capture one of the most exhilarating moments in a single sculpture.

Metal is one of earth’s healing forces. Whether this is due to the magnetic properties found within or the natural occurring balance that its minerals reinforce, metal plays an important part in our society. Sculptors that work with metal have come to realize that creating a work of art with different types of metal, can deliver a powerful feeling of timelessness, strength and beauty.
That Special Look of a Stainless Steel Sculpture
Sculptures made of stainless steel are intriguing statements of pure design elegance. Molded into various curves and shapes, they can add a sense of tranquility to any surrounding area. For example, a park that has benches and trees can suddenly come alive with the mixture of a delicately proportioned stainless steel sculpture. Everything appears crisper, brighter and a soothing of the soul transpires.
When Did Stainless Steel Sculpture Become Popular?
Stainless steel material was not perfected until the early 21st century. One of the most relevant examples of its use in art can be seen atop the Chrysler Building in Manhattan, New York City. The art deco design are actually replicas of the 1929 Chrysler radiator caps, but was also the beginning of how a stainless steel sculpture could reflect a natural status symbol.
Several artists that evolved into the world of stainless steel sculpture have proven that moving from one media to another can be achieved. For instance, Arthur Carter was a classical pianist that entered the world of sculpture during his later years. Seeing art in everything from his vast corporate holdings, he was able to share his wealth of beauty with the world.
New and interesting ways of working with stainless steel have recently extended the ability to make a stainless steel sculpture available to more of society in the reduction of size by using a laser-cut and water jet-cut system. One pioneer of this method is Babette Bloch of Connecticut. Everything from public art sculptures to small symbolic trophies have been designed and made for a host of different clients.

Stainless Steel Sculptures Expand the Art Scene
British metallurgist Harry Brearley is credited with inventing stainless steel in 1913, which he discovered by adding chromium to molten iron. The fact that this steel alloy could withstand corrosion and discoloration made it useful for a variety of applications in numerous industries. The properties that made stainless steel so attractive to industry is also what gave inspiration to artists to use this material in outside sculptures. The durability and reflective nature of stainless steel sculptures led to an an increase of artists erecting these outside sculptures in the 1970s. Artists whose stainless steel sculptures and methods for producing them have had influence in furthering this field include:
Pablo Picasso
Julio Gonzalez
David Smith
Alexander Calder

Harness the Power of Art with a Metal Garden Sculpture
Harness the Power of Art
Art is powerful. It has the exceptionable ability to draw people in, direct attention, and stimulate emotion and thought. A metal garden sculpture is particularly potent because it lives in the same space as the observer and engages them on a personal level. The ancients understood the power of sculptures and used them not only to beautify their world but also to announce their status and objectives.
Metal garden sculptures are an exciting way to harness this power and make it work for you. You can create a distinctive statement about your home or business by choosing a handcrafted metal garden sculpture by one of Sculptura’s renowned artists from around the world that reflects what your home or business is all about. Sculptura’s artists use steel, bronze, corten steel, and aluminum to create metal garden sculptures in a variety of styles.
Melbourne mixes the modern with the traditional
Traditional bronze sculptures have been fashioned for centuries because of their beauty and strength. “Mare and Foal” by Christian Maas is a striking example of traditional techniques and style. The flowing lines of this sculpture enhance the sense of love and caring between the mother and child and project those qualities outward into the landscape.
Of course, today’s artist aren’t afraid to mix and match traditional materials and techniques with more modern ones. Sculptura’s marine grade stainless steel metal garden sculptures combine durability with modern beauty and are an excellent option for outdoor or indoor installations. Add sophistication and drama to your landscape with one of Lachlan Ross’s intricate marine grade stainless steel metal garden sculptures. His graphic style and attention to fine details combines perfectly with this material for a bold modern look that is both visually arresting and thought provoking.
Stainless steel sculptures can also fuse the modern to the traditional. Christian Maas’s whimsical and fierce, life sized “crocodile” will enchant any observer through its combination of a traditional animal subject and modern stainless steel.
Sculpture sets the tone for your space
A metal garden sculpture can be an elegant finishing touch for your outdoor space or a bold statement that makes an immediate impression on your visitors and guests the moment they step onto your property. Whatever subject or material is used, by choosing a piece of art that evokes the ideals and values that you want to present, a quality metal garden sculpture will make a lasting impression on guests long after they leave.

The material can be polished to a deep luster.
Artists Sculpture Sydney Favorites
The artist who sculptures Sydney designs understand the human bond with the serenity of the wonders of nature. Aluminum sculptures have a powerful appearance. The material does not usually shine as brightly as polished stainless steel but does have a subtle glow, especially from a large sculpture of a rhinoceros. Aluminum is very durable and will reflect light, which is a characteristic of many metals. An aluminum sculpture is ideal for serene locations because the material is not glittery.
Tranquility and Serenity
Many environments are enhanced with sculptures that resemble human beings. Bronze is a preferred material for statues because bronze is made from copper and tin. An intricate design is easier to create with a soft material such as copper, which can be easily formed into various shapes. The artists who sculpture Sydney designs can use bronze for impressive sculptures that have a deep, copper color. The dark color helps to create a somber and tranquil atmosphere.

Stainless steel sculpture art is an extremely advantageous medium for artists. Stainless steel sculpture art, while relatively young, has years of structural practice behind it, as steel remains basic to the entire industrial world. Compared to other materials in which sculptors have specialized for centuries, steel is durable, though it possesses the quality of being quite malleable. The revolutionary breakthrough in metallurgy giving steel a “rustless” quality only occurred just following the turn of the last century while stainless steel sculpture art has only established itself as commonplace within the last 50 years.
Stainless Steel Sculpture Art is a Primary Specialty
With so many creative options open to artists, stainless steel sculpture art has easily become a primary medium for those wanting to make a bold statement in their art. The nature of steel is that of strength. The beneficial physical properties of stainless steel sculpture art makes it the primary choice for large-scale work as there are no ceilings on the outdoor world.
The brilliant finish dazzles in the white-hot light of the sun or shimmers in the spotlights at night. Artists without the fundamental facilities to forge, cut and shape pieces have available to them many fabricators willing to mill these pieces. Many a contractor who is well-versed in the properties of steel and how to form, cut and join steel certainly can exercise their creative muscles and start making their own artistic statements by producing their own stainless steel sculpture art.
Stainless Steel Sculpture is Versatile
As with other sculpting materials, there is often the need to start with a superstructure that is clad with the material being used. This is also possible with steel, though steel is easily heated to the temperature needed to allow it to be formed and shaped.
In addition to steel sheeting that is cut with heat, plasma or lasers, there are cross-sectional shapes in rod or rebar; pipes of round, rectangular or square shapes; u-shaped channels; I-beams, angle-iron and much more. Steel plate is used in stainless steel sculpture as are bar stock in round, flat, hex or square thicknesses starting at 1/8-inch and going up from there.
For the contemporary sculptor, there is an ever-increasing array of choices in terms of methods and materials available to them. With the help of steel fabricators, artists now have a greater range of expression in stainless steel sculpture art. There is virtually no limit as to the design, style and appearance of stainless steel sculpture art. It is really quite an exciting medium of expression.

When Aluminium Sculpture Art was more expensive than gold!
The first step in extracting aluminium was made by the famous Paracelsus in the 16th century. From alums he separated an aluminous soil which contained the oxide of a then unknown metal. Then, Andreas Marggraf, a German chemist, in the mid 1800’s repeated the experiment. He called the aluminium oxide ‘alumina.’ From then on it became a widely sought after metal.
Interestingly, aluminium was very rare and precious before an industrial method of production was discovered. It was even more expensive than gold to produce. So, it is not surprising that aluminium was mostly used for jewelry and other luxury articles for the royal families of Europe. Jewelers using this pricy metal particularly liked the shining silvery metal and its exceptional flexibility.
Aluminium Sculpture Art for the Masses
The inexpensive method of producing aluminium was discovered by Hall and Heroult in 1886, and changed the metal’s role in everyday life. At the turn of the century the new material left the court chambers and started to appear in the streets. The non-corrosive metal was very well-suited for city, park and garden sculptures. Sir Alfred Gilbert, the late 19th century celebrated British sculptor made his famous statue, Eros, from aluminium. It is still in Piccadilly Circus and is deemed a London landmark.
Aluminium sculpture art is becoming more and more popular for a couple of reasons:
It is cheaper than bronze casting.
It is highly corrosion resistance.
It is lighter than bronze which makes installation easier, especially for monumental sculptures.
Come see for yourself
Bottom line- it behooves every sculptor, no matter their specialisation to attain a basic familiarity with aluminium. As it behooves every sculpture lover to come over to our Gallery and look at the many ways aluminium sculpture art can be imagined. You will be delighted with what you see. Unlike steel and iron, which have been around for more than a thousand years, stainless steel is the new kid on the block in the world of metallurgy, having first been produced only 100 years ago. This may seem hard to believe, given how prominent it is in almost every facet of our lives. But this simply emphasizes what an important breakthrough stainless steel was. It has revolutionized almost every industry, from healthcare to catering equipment, to the automotive and construction industries, and of course to stainless steel sculpture art.
Who invented Stainless Steel?
As with many major inventions, there is dispute over who invented it, but for our purposes we are going with a gentleman by the name of Harry Brearley from Sheffield, England. He called his new metal “rustless steel”, as that was what he was after. The date was June 4, 1912. Two months later, on August 20, 1912, stainless steel was cast for the first time.
The secret to the success of stainless steel lies in its incredible physical and chemical properties. It is highly corrosion and heat resistant. It is formable, weldable, durable, and as we now understand it does not rust. So of course, artists jumped on the stainless steel bandwagon.
The many benefits of Stainless Steel Sculpture Art
Let’s count the ways!
It’s only been in the last 50 years, that stainless steel sculpture art has become commonplace. For many sculptors it is their primary material. Artists just could not ignore all its benefits. Christian Maas has been focusing on sculpture since 1987. His monumental works can be seen in public spaces in France but also abroad. He often strives to achieve a sense of realism, both in his representations of animals and the female form. Christian Maas is a very committed artist who is only too happy to put his talent to the service of a worthy social or environmental cause, as he did with the Toreshima series dedicated to birds affected by oil-spill disasters, shown in Monaco’s Oceanographic Museum. The artist has his own foundry which gives him control of the whole artistic process.
How did you get into the art world? I have always been immersed in the art world. I was brought up on a farm and was already making sculptures as a toddler. With my grandmother from the age of about four I used to root around in the rubbish and make stuff out of the objects I found. After that it was chance encounters that propelled me into the work I do now.
What have been the milestones in your development as an artist? My work really evolved when I started winning competitions. I entered an international contest in 1997 and won first prize. That really was a trigger. They said it was a coincidence so I entered many more competitions and each time won first prize. Regards my style, I have periods. I also work on animal sculptures, the female body and furniture.
What is your view of art? For me art is a game. A game of the first person (oneself) which allows you to break the rules in order to create your own rules and world, always with this pretention of matching your individuality with the universe.
What or who are your main artistic influences? I have always been drawn to form. I am particularly fond of the animal world and the female universe – I revisit ancient myths by sculpting female forms wearing clothes from our time, thereby creating new symbols which become reference points for our society. The universe of my sculptures is not a secondary artificiality but a reality which strives to immerse us in an alternative world, and distance us from banality and violence.
What is your technique? In sculpture everyone has their own technique. There is a lot of improvisation. Building a car does not require the same technique as shaping an animal. I spend 15 to 16 hours a day in my studio and work in a state of complete innocence. For me spontaneity is the first criteria for a work that is going to move people and will last. There are times when I have 15 pieces on the go. I am always ahead with my works because I take notes. The minute I want to start a new piece I get out my notes and choose the work that inspires me the most at that moment. My pieces are like bolts of enthusiasm, impromptu visual musings – direct visual art thoughts. Like a surgeon, I meticulously dissect my subjects, breaking them down to understand how best to recreate them. I know very well that there will be pieces I will not have time to complete.
Your sculptures are often imposing. Do you prefer the large format? I love the big format – it’s spectacular! I find it more interesting. I have gone so far as to produce a piece that is 12 metres high. A sculpture of this size is made using scaffolding like they do with buildings. And to be honest, there is less competition in the big format sculptures. I do everything in my studio from the first mouldings to the casting. That’s why my prices are so competitive!
What role does chance play in your works? Most of the time, I know what I want to do. But sometimes I start a sculpture and during the process change it as I did with the Grace Jones sculpture. However I still start out with a detailed plan of it in my head.
You recently opened an art gallery with the dancer and choreographer Ramon Reis. How did this come about? It was Ramon’s idea to open the gallery in Monaco. Initially there was no question of me being part of the project but on the phone we talked about a name for the gallery and it all happened quite naturally. I am happy as I have always had close ties with Monaco. I have several sculptures on show here, notably the McLaren Formula 1 car at Port Hercule and pieces in the Oceanographic Museum.
Can you tell us about any of your future projects? Actually I am thinking about a sculpture of Ramon dancing. I have also just completed, among others, a sculpture of a female nude balanced on high heel shoes, in bronze. She will be coming soon to the gallery in Monaco.

Part of Darryn Lyons’ colourful art collection now on display
COLOURFUL Geelong Mayor Darryn Lyons is courting controversy after handing over part of his private — and provocative — art collection to the city’s gallery for a summer exhibition.
The former paparazzi king has been a serious art collector for 20 years and his extensive collection includes eight Andy Warhol paintings.
Lyons has loaned 32 works — including a detailed life-size sculpture of a naked woman bending over — to the Geelong Gallery for its centrepiece exhibition Lyons’ view — the Mayor’s choice.
“There are some very controversial pieces, but I love the female form and I don’t look at it as controversial at all. It’s been painted since Adam and Eve,” he said.
“The only decent picture I’ve ever seen of the male form was Rudolf Nureyev in his prime, which was a famous piece that I can’t afford to buy yet, but intend to.”
Lyons began collecting art when he was living in New York and said the first time he laid eyes on an original Warhol was “better than sex”.
He put that painting of a dollar sign on lay-by, walked around the block and decided he would “beg, borrow or steal” to buy the set of six.
“It was just the sexiest and coolest thing I’ve seen. Andy Warhol is still possibly today, and will be forever, one of the coolest artists in the world.”
Lyons won’t reveal the dollar value of his collection, though it could be well into the millions, and is unsure how many pieces he owns. “I don’t think if you’re a collector you ever count, you just appreciate,” he said. He guesses he has about 130 original paintings, photos and sculptures from artists including Sir Peter Blake (“the original pop artist”) and Stuart Semple (“I’m backing him as the next Warhol-esque”).
One of his favourites is the bronze sculpture of the naked woman, Bending nude (2004) by Christian Maas.
“As soon as I saw it I had to have it. It was just perfection to me,” Lyons said, though his mother is less impressed.
This year, for the first time, Lyons was painted for the Archibald Prize by Geelong-raised skull artist Terry Taylor, who has a huge following in Europe.
Lyons is happy to be sharing some of his most treasured possessions with his beloved city and, typically, has a much bigger goal in mind. He has begun lobbying the Prime Minister for support to build a national photographic gallery in Geelong. “Arts and culture are a passion of mine. I personally have the best photographic collection, historically, in Australia. I challenge anyone to have a better collection,” he said. “I want to have another gallery down here that is strictly photographic.
In the meantime, Geelong Gallery director Geoffrey Edwards is happy to have Lyons as a drawcard and is comfortable with the mayor’s flamboyant nature coming through in the exhibition.
It has also been curated to include Lyons’ favourite pieces from the gallery’s permanent collection, such as Frederick McCubbin’s A bush burial and Eugene von Guerard’s View of Geelong.
“There are some controversial works, but art is about promoting ideas and provoking conversation so that is good too,” Edwards said.
“The mayor is such a maverick figure in Geelong and in Victoria. How many mayors around the land collect art? So what an opportunity for the gallery to work with the mayor, very happily and closely, on the selection.”
United – Stainless Steel Sculpture
‘United ‘sculpture is taken at the Chelsea Flower and Garden show. Our sculpture was placed with Flemings and they won a gold medal for their display.
The latest creation from sculptor Lachlan Ross, can only be described as heavenly.
The stunning 3 metre tall angel wings sculpture took over 12 months to construct from hundreds of pieces of marine grade stainless steel. The steel was painstakingly hand-welded together in stunning detail to create steel feathers and an illusion of lightness despite the significant weight of each wing.
This unique artwork is a stand-out piece amongst Ross’ recent collection which have the same juxtoposition between strength and weightlessness.
