Two young foals meet nose-to-nose, testing the boundaries of curiosity and trust. In this companion piece Hickmore unites Regard (alert, poised) and Appraise (neck swept low, investigating the ground) to stage the split-second ritual every horse performs when greeting a newcomer. Cast in hot-patinated bronze using the lost-wax process, each foal bears the sculptor’s trademark palette-knife marks—broad, leaf-like strokes that keep the clay’s original energy alive in metal.
Although the pair can be displayed individually, together they form a lyrical dialogue of mirrored arcs: one crescent sweeps upward, the other downward, creating a visual heartbeat across the negative space between them. Subtle texturing along the shoulders and flanks catches raking light, while polished highlights on the muzzles draw the eye to the point of almost-contact. Mounted on minimalist steel plinths, the work suits both contemporary interiors and landscaped gardens.
