Christophe Gaignon

Meet Christophe Gaignon

Christophe Gaignon is a self-taught French artist whose work reimagines the mirror as a work of fine art. His creations are guided entirely by his imagination and by knowledge drawn from years alongside noted antique dealers and decorators, a background that lends his pieces both craft and a deep sense of material history.

In each unique work, the mirror sheds its conventional form to become something else: a celestial eye, a window onto the invisible, an abstract object with a profound philosophical charge. Something of an alchemist, Gaignon has developed an extraordinary and closely held technique that is his alone. Working at the crossroads of researcher and collector, he blends extra-transparent glass with recycled glass to bring a new dimension to optical phenomena. Between reflection and refraction, his crystalline, richly coloured works reveal a vision of the world that is at once pure and magical.

A note from the artist:
“Through my research into silver oxidation on glass, I play with reflection, movement and light, drawing on the shades that nature offers. Blue, pink, green, silver oxide and gold, purple, black, colours to carry you away into the imagination. The mirror then becomes a painting, a unique piece. My work is the result of know-how, technicality and the mastery of imaginative powers.”
