Where Gaignon’s blues and roses open a room up, the black and bronze works do something closer to the opposite — they draw the light in and hold onto it. The outer ring is smoked almost to opacity, streaked with graphite and charcoal, and it takes the room in as a dark, moving weather system rather than a clean reflection. Set into it is a burnt bronze band, a hot rim of amber and rust that reads like the edge of an eclipse.
At the centre, the surface breaks into something mineral. Silvered and fractured, more geode than mirror, it scatters light in fine shards instead of returning it. The clear lens sitting off-centre is the only part of the work that behaves conventionally — a single sphere of ordinary reflection in the middle of all that geology.
The palette is what makes this variant so useful in a room that already has a lot going on. Black and bronze doesn’t compete with timber, stone, brass or leather — it sits into them. On a white or plaster wall it reads as a deep aperture; in a darker interior, above a fireplace or in a panelled study, it becomes almost architectural. It is also, of all his colourways, the one that changes most with the light in the room across a day.

Lighting tip: dark-toned works need a light source to reveal the bronze. A warm wall-wash or a single directional downlight brings the amber band alive; flat ambient light leaves it reading as a black disc.
