Made in 2004, this gelatin silver photograph catches Gisele Bündchen in profile on a rocky shoreline, tipping a bottle back to drink, tongs in her free hand over a small charcoal barbecue, in a metallic string bikini and tie-up platform heels. Behind her a pale cliff face and breaking surf fill the frame. Von Unwerth shoots it in bright, high-contrast black and white, the incongruity of glamour-model-meets-backyard-cookout played completely straight.
Read as fine art, the picture is a study in deadpan, the supermodel cast as an unbothered beach cook, heels and bikini set against tongs and a battered grill. The theme is glamour undercut by the everyday, a sly joke about appetite and self-sufficiency in which the subject is plainly in on it and running the gag. Von Unwerth’s signature is exactly this humour, staging beauty and then puncturing it while keeping her subject fully in charge of the scene.
