Shot in Paris in 1995, this C-print catches Kate Moss crouched in front of an open refrigerator in a pale pink satin slip and matching coat, a glass bottle of milk in one hand, fingers to her lips in a caught-in-the-act glance at the camera. Spilled groceries, eggs, tomatoes, a bag of greens, a crocodile handbag, scatter across the parquet around her. Von Unwerth shoots in soft, warm colour, the domestic clutter deliberately at odds with the lingerie-and-couture polish.
Read as fine art, the picture is a study in appetite and mischief, a midnight raid on the fridge staged as fashion editorial, the milk a wink at innocence the rest of the frame quietly contradicts. The theme is glamour caught off-duty, the everyday kitchen turned into a set on which the subject is knowing, hungry and completely at ease. Von Unwerth’s signature is exactly this collision of the domestic and the decadent, staging spontaneity while her subject holds the room.
