Made at Cannes in 1990 for Vogue Italia, this gelatin silver photograph shows Christy Turlington and Linda Evangelista reclining side by side on striped beach loungers, hands behind their heads, legs crossed toward each other in dark swimsuits, fishnets and heels. Behind them a bright expanse of white beach furniture stretches back in the midday sun. Von Unwerth shoots from above in crisp black and white, the two supermodels a study in mirrored, indolent poise.
Read as fine art, the picture is about glamour at rest, two of the era’s defining faces caught in a moment of languid, deliberate ease, aware of the camera and entirely unbothered by it.
