Let’s Take a Walk, 2012

Made in 2012, this C-print stages two models on a gilded French sofa in a bright, panelled salon. One sits front-on in pink lingerie, a black rabbit mask pushed up over painted whiskers, holding a red leash; the other kneels behind in a curly pink wig and silver shorts, a cord held between her teeth. It is pure von Unwerth theatre: costume-box props, high-key light and a wink to the camera that keeps the mood knowing rather than earnest.
Read as fine art, the picture plays with the imagery of role-play and power, the leash and mask borrowing the language of the boudoir only to send it up. The theme is performance itself, two women in on the same joke, the “walk” of the title a piece of deadpan mischief. Von Unwerth’s signature is exactly this reversal, staging provocation while leaving the agency firmly with her subjects, who treat the whole scene as a game they are running. The work belongs in a confident, design-led interior and speaks to collectors drawn to fashion photography’s crossover into fine art. Ellen von Unwerth’s photographs are issued as limited editions, each print part of a controlled run.
