Nick Veasey’s BanXsy After takes one of the most talked-about moments in recent art history and turns it inside out. The work X-rays a framed print of Banksy’s Girl with Balloon in the instant after its notorious 2018 self-destruction, the lower half already passed through the blades and hanging in shredded ribbons. What Veasey exposes is the very thing the original stunt kept hidden: the shredding mechanism built into the frame itself, laid bare in ghostly detail.
There is a deep irony at the heart of the piece. Banksy’s act depended entirely on a concealed device, and Veasey’s entire practice is the revealing of concealed devices. BanXsy After is therefore art about art, a commentary on a commentary, using the X-ray to strip a famous gesture of its mystery and ask what is really going on beneath the surface of value, authenticity and spectacle. It is a meditation on how the art world manufactures worth, and on the machinery, literal and figurative, that hides behind it.
