Nick Veasey’s Batman takes one of the most recognisable figures in popular culture and looks straight through the armour. The caped, cowled silhouette stands in its familiar heroic stance, but Veasey’s X-ray dissolves the costume to reveal the skull grinning behind the mask and the human skeleton beneath the muscled suit. The result is instantly recognisable and quietly unsettling, the superhero rendered mortal.
That mortality is precisely the point. Of all the great comic icons, this is the one with no powers at all, only a man, his resolve and his fear, and Batman finds the truth in that. Veasey strips away the myth to show what was always underneath: a human being, as breakable as anyone, choosing to stand anyway.
