Greed is Good

Artist: Nick Veasey

Nick Veasey’s Greed is Good conjures the high priest of eighties excess: a figure in shirtsleeves and braces, leaning over his desk amid the rituals of indulgence, cigarette smoke curling through the air around him. The title borrows the infamous credo of the decade’s appetite for more, and Veasey answers it in the most direct way he can, the X-ray peeling back the tailoring and the bravado to reveal the skull grinning beneath.

It is a portrait of ambition with the mask removed. Greed is Good sets the trappings of success against the one fact none of it can outrun, turning a celebration of excess into a sly memento mori. Veasey’s lens finds the irony in the pose: the harder the figure grasps at wealth and status, the more plainly the work shows what is actually underneath, a body no different from any other, headed the same way. It is satire and reminder in equal measure, as pointed now as the era it skewers.

Rendered with Veasey’s characteristic clarity, the smoke, the desk and the figure read together in a single luminous layer. The piece is a natural fit for a study, office or any interior that appreciates a darkly witty statement, and speaks to collectors drawn to pop culture, satire and conceptual photography. Blending science, photography and fine art, Greed is Good is produced as a strictly limited edition.
