The Fly Away

Artist: Nick Veasey

Nick Veasey’s The Fly Away stages a getaway in mid-flight: a helicopter poised on its skids while a suited figure dashes from a briefcase trailing a storm of banknotes, the cash scattering across the dark in a long, chaotic arc. Veasey’s X-ray opens the whole scene at once, the machine’s rotor and frame, the running figure and the swirling money all rendered transparent, a heist movie frozen and turned to light.

For all its cinematic drama, the piece carries a sharp edge. The Fly Away plays on the fantasy of the clean escape and the windfall, then lets the X-ray strip it bare, exposing the machinery beneath both the getaway and the greed. There is wit in watching wealth literally fly away, a comment on how easily money slips through our fingers and how much of life is spent chasing it. Veasey turns a moment of pure spectacle into a wry meditation on fortune, ambition and the things we will run for.

Rendered with Veasey’s characteristic clarity, the helicopter, the figure and the flying cash read together in a single luminous layer. The piece is made for a study, office or any interior with a sense of drama, and speaks to collectors drawn to bold, narrative work and conceptual photography. Blending science, photography and fine art, The Fly Away is produced as a strictly limited edition.
