Dark Opal
Artist: Jeremy Kay
Jeremy Kay’s Dark Opal is the quietest work in the series and the most dependent on light. Warm champagne and bronze pearl domes spiral outward across a tonal field with almost no colour contrast, so the pattern reveals itself only through shadow, reflection and the play of the backlit core beneath.
Move past it and the surface turns over — matte and sculptural in one moment, opalescent and liquid the next. The work behaves differently at every hour of the day, drawing its character from whatever light happens to be in the room rather than imposing a colour of its own.
Dark Opal demonstrates the restraint that sits alongside the bolder end of Kay’s practice. Where other works in the series announce themselves, this one rewards proximity and patience. A sophisticated choice for neutral interiors, and for collectors drawn to texture over spectacle.
