Jeremy Kay’s Soft Voltage loops pale pink, lilac and coral outward in evenly spaced rings, interrupted near the centre by a band of ice blue that cools the entire palette down. Every tone is pitched soft, yet the rings are tight and precise enough to keep a current running through the surface.
That contradiction is the point. The work reads as gentle from across a room and considerably more electric up close, where the individually cast beads sharpen into hundreds of distinct points of colour and the backlighting picks out the harder pinks and reds beneath the pastel surface.
Soft Voltage shows Kay’s control of a restricted palette — a pastel work that still hums rather than settling into prettiness. It suits lighter interiors, where its subtler tones can register without needing darkness to carry them.
